Having Fun in New Zealand: Cool Stuff to Do in Auckland
There is plenty to do in Auckland, whether you’re a local or just visiting. Admittedly, if you’re just visiting for the first time like I did, it is probably much more entertaining as everything seems new and different. I’d guess locals get used to it overtime although there is so much to do that I don’t most people living here ever get to experience the half of it.
I’ve only had a couple of days before having to move on so my time was definitely short but I tried to make most out of it. In the end I had heaps of fun and left with a firm decision to come back one day but spend at least a week here and give the city a proper tour.
The War Memorial Museum
If you’re interested in the original Maori culture on New Zealand, I’d definitely suggest you pay this museum a visit when you find yourself in Auckland. There is a truly stunning exhibit showcasing artistic works of Maori people dating from 12th to 14th century as well a stunning, 25-meter long canoe.
There is plenty more to see inside the museum, of course, but with my time being short, I focused mostly on the Maori exhibit. The natural collection seems to be quite impressive as well but I must admit I just rushed through it, leaving it for my next visit.
Sky City Casino
When I was done with the daily activities on my first day of the visit, I headed over to famous Skycity Casino to grab a dinner and, of course, try my luck with the pokies. Even if you aren’t a huge fan of gambling, this is an amazing place that you should check out for sure. As of recently, Skycitycasino also offers an online platform that you can find here, so you can keep on playing even when you back to your room.
The place offers more than 2,000 video slots and the experience of walking around and just seeing all the lights and colors is quite mesmerizing. There are also gaming tables featuring blackjack, baccarat, roulette, and some other games that I couldn’t identify at a glance.
I’ve noticed there is also a poker room and I thought about giving it a go for a couple of hours but decided against it. It wouldn’t be the first time that a “short session” turned into an all-nighter and I really couldn’t afford it as I wanted to spend my last day in Auckland visiting some more sights and not sleeping in my hotel room.
Admiring the City & Checking Out the Zoo
The next day, I had just about enough time for a relaxed walk and one more serious activity. So, I spent the morning checking out the city center and its amazing architecture. It was really a great way to wake up as some of these buildings are just stunning.
Finally, after having my morning coffee and something to eat, I headed over to the zoo. This is an imposing place spreading over more than 40 acres and featuring more than 130 animal species from all over the world. It’s really easy to lose the track of time here and had my friend not called me, I could have easily missed my departure.
My time in Auckland may have been short but it was definitely very sweet. It’s one of the more interesting cities I’ve had the opportunity to visit and I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface. So, if at all possible, I’ll be coming back here sooner rather than later and this time around I fully plan on doing it properly.Posted on: September 13, 2020jackhasitall
